The modus operandi of transferring your RSS feeds post…

In case you’re still hooked on to Google Reader posting your RSS feeds to it, you must have been sent alerts about the services shutting down. Google broadcast-ed the closure of Google Reader from 1st July, and so, it’s high time that you switched over and transferred your subscriptions to other services like Feedly or News Blur, if you haven’t yet. To be a little elaborate you should simply stop sending any further subscriptions to Google Reader and ensure that you upgrade your data through Google Takeout so that your meticulously cultivated RSS feeds do not become extinct.

As of now, you have many options and your alternatives are likely to go up in the months that follow. The following lines explain how your RSS feeds can find a new nesting place in other websites and the modus operandi of making the switch.

Exporting and claiming ownership of your feeds

Now that you know that Google Reader has closed shop, you’ll naturally want to shift all your feeds on a primary basis. RSS readers of your postings with Google Reader will be shifting your subscriptions as a matter of course the moment they tap into your account with Google.  On your end, you should first save all your feeds by creating a file or folder and storing the same in it. Thereafter, you should be staking claim to your subscriptions by transferring your existing feeds with Google Reader to other services.

Google Chrome
Google Chrome (Photo credit: thms.nl)

For ensuring that, you’ll need to redirect to Google Takeout and click on the tab ‘Choose Services’. Thereafter, you’ll have to click on the icon marked ‘Reader’. Google Takeout will work out the total number of dossiers (along with their sizes) that need to be exported in no time. A ZIP file will be automatically created when you click on the icon that says ‘Create Archive’. Subsequently click on the ‘downloads’ tabs for downloading data to your computer’s hard drive.

On opening the ZIP file, you’ll view a ‘Reader’ folder, and when you click open that folder, you’ll be led to a .xml file which stores all your feeds or subscriptions. Thereafter, it’s upto you to decide where you’d prefer to store your RSS contributions. You can take your pick from the following services.

Feedly

Though you have a plenty of choices, one of the most popular services is Feedly. Feedly has of late, brought out Feedly Cloud. You’ll find Feedly very user friendly as you would be able to navigate through their site with ease. Those entrusted with managing Feedly were aware that Google Reader would be closing down shortly and therefore were kept busy helping the subscribers of Reader make the shift to their services. If you’re thinking making the shift to Feedly, you’ll be able to make good use of their Android app.

Digg

Digg is a new kid on the block and is owned by Betaworks. It is proving to be a big hit with RSS readers. Though it has got underway only recently, it is being lapped up quickly by new users. Anyway, to send your feeds to Digg, you’ll first have to open a fresh account (despite the fact that you already had signed up with them in the past). Digg, like Feedly will be able to draw up your entire Google Reader contributions if you become their subscriber prior to July 1. You’ll find the Diggs icons absolutely stunning on each narrative.

There are other services you can select from like ‘Flipboard,’ ‘The Old Reader’, ‘AOL Reader’, and ‘NewsBlur’ to name a few.

An evocative article on the some of the most…

There would be phases in your lifespan when you’ll be out of your depths and feel distraught. It’s quite normal for you to be gripped and overwhelmed by feelings of depression once in a while. However if your state of gloominess or melancholia persists or continues for quite some time, say more than 2-3 weeks, you’re said to be beset with a grave medical condition that psychiatrists and psychologists term as clinical depression.
In case you have ever experienced a depressive bout or are currently going through such a phase, then you’ll be at least relieved to know that you’re not alone to have such feelings. In USA alone, approximately 30 million individuals are diagnosed with depression out of which nearly 19 million people suffer from a major form of the ailment. There was a time when people had no choice but to resort to simple home solutions for curing oneself of depression.
However with the gradual advancement of medical sciences, and major breakthroughs made in the mental health segment, there are numerous treatment procedures available for dealing with this dreaded disease. Antidepressants, antihistamines, and other generic medications easily available in medical stores, pharmacies, and apothecaries can tackle severe forms of depression. But if your depression seems to be mild, antidepressants or other allopathic drugs may not be as effective. In such an eventuality, you could surely try some home remedies as panaceas for your mild depression. These home remedies are very much affordable with almost no side effects, and have stood the test of time.
Home remedies for confronting depression
1. St. John’s wort
St. John’s wort is a plant that bears yellow flowers and the plant’s extracts are used as an ingredient in teas, pills, and medications. Studies and surveys have revealed that the extracts have therapeutic properties that can heal milder forms of depression as effectively as antidepressants. The upside of using this home remedy (as a curative for depression) is that it is free of any side effects usually associated with prescription medicines.
2. Fish Oil
There are certain species of fish like salmon, herring, cod, and tuna that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Pregnant women and young mothers who have frequent mood swings and suffer from spells of depression are recommended to eat fishes containing Omega-3 fatty acids. You’ll be able to keep your depression under control if you regularly partake of fish oil abundant in Omega-3 fatty acids.
3. Saffron
Though saffron is a costly herb that is generally used for garnishing different food items and cuisines in the Middle Eastern and South East Asian countries, it has also found to be extremely effective as a natural antidepressant. Saffron is believed to increase the secretion levels of serotonin in your brain-the hormone responsible for tinkering with your mood. Saffron can be equally efficient as any antidepressant like Depixol and Fluanxol but without the concomitant side effects like excessive sweating or reduced sexual urge.
4. Meditation
The curative properties of meditation had long been known to saints and yogis in India since the ancient times. However, of late, the West is waking to up the prophylactic benefits of meditation. Meditation combined with modern therapeutic procedures can, in effect, help you to lift yourself from the morass of depression and also prevent you from relapses.

An evocative review of Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets

Amazon Kindle
Amazon Kindle (Photo credit: agirregabiria)

The market for tablets is expected to hot up and receive a fresh boost of competition when Amazon goes public with its next-gen Kindle Fire tablets, most probably in the first week of September this year. Amazon sent out invites to different print and electronic media companies for a press meeting in Santa Monica, California scheduled on 6th September. Although Amazon did not reveal or disclose the purpose for calling the press symposium, it is widely rumoured that the online giant will commercially launch the Kindle Fire HD 2 Tablet. Amazon, with a view to garnering a larger slice of the market for its tablets, had been working on the development of two innovative tablets one to replace the present version and another 10-inch tablet.
Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 2 is set to rekindle competition for tablets and set hearts aflutter
Though the Kindle Fire tablet from the Amazon stable meets all the yardsticks of a good quality tablet, it had been facing stiff competition from Google’s Nexus 7, iPad Mini or the Samsung’s Galaxy. Kindle tablets or slates occupied the 2nd slot just behind Apple’s iPad in terms of sales. Samsung’s Galaxy model dislodged Kindle from the 2nd spot for a while but has not been able to keep up the heat and retain its position. Its new model has not been successful in impressing the targeted segment.
Furthermore, as Amazon’s prime competitor in bookselling shifts its focus from tablet hardware production, the company will try to make to most of the newly created opportunities for shoring up its worldwide tablet sales via the Kindle Fire HD 2. The current edition of the Kindle Fire costs $159 but the upcoming version is going to be priced in the region of $99 which will surely stifle competition as all other tablets in its genre are more costly. At that price it’ll be in a position to give stiff competition to Chinese tablets that dominate the Android-oriented tablet market.
The upgraded tablet will come with a higher resolution at 1,280 x 800 pixels (the current one’s resolution is 1,024 x 600 pixels). The diagonal dimension will remain unchanged at 7-inches. The forthcoming array will display an upgraded version of the Kindle Fire HD. This model’s interface resolution will be 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. The diagonal measurement again will remain the same. However, the piece-de-resistance would be the improved edition of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9”. This model’s display resolution would be 2,560 X 1,600 pixels which is a significant step up from the present 8.9” model’s resolution (1,920 x 1,200 pixels). With that kind of resolution, Amazon’s cutting-edge novel tablet will have a higher pixel resolution than Apple’s iPad 9.7 Retina display.
The soon to be launched newer models will also have a sleeker finish with the edges or corners being more chiselled or honed and the sloping will be more even. The volume control and power buttons will be found on the back-case and will be positioned in a manner to prevent unintentional presses while the gadget lies on a flat surface with the display side facing up. The new models will also be more portable than the current ones.

Sexual Mores of Men: Is it more psychological than…

Women on Top: How Real Life Has Changed Women'...
Women on Top: How Real Life Has Changed Women’s Sexual Fantasies (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The stereotyped gender roles have indoctrinated us into thinking that men are more obsessed with sex than women. The general perception is that men tend to idealize about sex more than women. However, recent surveys and groundbreaking research on this subject has thrown up startling facts that can go a long way in busting the myths that had hitherto been regarded as truisms.
Current research and surveys indicate that men have exaggerated sexual notions
Research is undertaken by the Duke University in USA conclusively established through its study on different sexual attitudes of both the genders, that:-
 Women are more keen to discuss sexual issues than men
 Men put up a pretence of being more interested in sex to demonstrate their masculinity and to fit into gender typecast
 Both men and women tend to overemphasize the number of times they engage in sex when they’re in an exalted state of mind
The researchers carried out an assessment on nearly 200 subjects (comprising both men and women) regarding the sexual mores of both the sexes. The subjects were told to register their sexual activities and ideas in an online diary for one month based on specific parameters like urge to engage in sex, the intensity of participation, dysfunction or discomfiture, and number of orgasms.
In the ultimate review, where participants in the survey were required to fill up an online questionnaire from, researchers came to the conclusion that men were more likely to overstate their sexual engagements, especially if they were in excellent mood, compared to women. To be more specific, males would have a tendency to overstressed that they had multiple sexual partners or had engaged in sex numerous times. Towards that end, women tended to be more guarded.

The study revealed that women are less interested or eager to talk about their sexual activities. They had the temperament and the character to suppress facts about their sexual life. Men on the other hand, were more candid and willing to relate about their sexual activities and thoughts even to those with whom they had a passing acquaintance. However, there was nothing anomalous in the sexual attitudes or mores that the participants in the survey reflected rather they were just trying to live up to their stereotypical roles according to their genders.

In another study, the subjects were hooked up with lie detector apparatuses while they answered questions relating to their sexual notions. It was found that men lied about the number of sexual partners they had or the number of times they had engaged in sexual romps with a partner. In this regard, women were not very willing to reveal facts about their sexual activities and less forthcoming to converse about sexual issues.

One’s mood also had a considerable impact when it came to reporting about sexual indulgences irrespective of the individual’s gender. So, a person would be more prone to overrate his or her sexual exploits if he or she was in a noticeably good frame of mind. Conversely, if someone was feeling down and out, he or she was more likely to underestimate their sexual urges or not attach much importance to his or her sexual appetite.

A cheap and portable way to diagnose HIV/AIDS in…

It has been observed quite a lot that people of developing countries are mostly diagnosed with different types of diseases. Improper care and treatment leads them to painful sufferings or even proves fatal. When virus like HIV or tuberculosis hit any backward region of developing country, that region of that territory becomes a dead land. The improvement in technology has introduced a device which is portable and can diagnose any such deadly disease, which can put a bar against its motion.
What is the diagnostic device?
The latest invention by a team of experienced biologist and professor is the PCR machine or Polymerase Chain Reaction machine. The PCR machine is a small and portable device which is capable of detecting such diseases with ease. The machine is easy to operate and can be packed and moved to remote areas for such operation.
The invention of the device through stages:
The research started in the year 2004 under the supervision of Scherer (leader in microfluidics) and his student George Maltezos (PhD 2007) at Caltech. The research was based on how to introduce biological fluids into technology in the real world issues. H5N1 bird flu had erupted in Asia and the scholars took the advantage to operate their invention into real world scenario. PCR machine played a crucial role in diagnosing the diseases by taking small amount of sample for tests. However, the machine was too expensive for the hospitals in the developing countries to purchase.
Nobel laureate Baltimore’s approach brought a new turn in this research field. The PCR machine was now claimed to detect the deadly viruses like HIV. The new version of the machine was introduced in the year 2006 which can evaluate the test in only 94 seconds. The price of the machine was also reduced abruptly and it got global recognition. Still, the size was big enough to carry it to remote areas to diagnose the underprivileged people as well as to treat them.
Finally the machine arrived which was portable, robust, inexpensive, automated as well as fast. The one was operated with rechargeable battery and can be carried to any destination around the world. The latest model was capable to diagnosis HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, lower-respiratory diseases, diarrhoea and many more life talking diseases in no time. Even the cost of the PCR machine dropped down to almost $1000.
How the machine works:
The machine works on the sample DNA and produces thousands of multiple copies of that DNA. Under certain temperature the double stranded DNA splits into single strand. The duplicate copies of the DNA show the result within a short span of time and indicate the diagnosis results. This helps to identify the disease efficiently.
The invention was a miracle for the betterment of global health. Poor, under privileged and under developed communities who are deprived from the technical boon can heal up under the ease of the diagnosis of this machine. In true sense PCR device is a cheap, portable and fast way to diagnose in the developing countries.
